- Open regedit.exe
Navigate to following key:
- Click Edit Menu -> New -> DWORD with name of "FSSHTTPOff" (without quotes)
- Click on "FSSHTTPOff" and enter value of 1
- Close any Office Applications and browser sessions

Excel 2013 documents opening slow in SharePoint 2013
Using Office 2013 (15.0.4701.1001), often excel documents would hang for 20-30 seconds. Microsoft suggested the following key be added to the end user registry:

To the best of my understanding, the root cause of this symptom is a document somehow became corrupted in cell storage / cobalt. This registry change doesn't take the corruption away--it just gets around it by causing the Office client to work like Office 2007 rather than Office 2010 or Office 2013. Deleting the file and replacing it with a healthy version from versioning or from backup may be the best way to deal with the corruption. If there are several that are corrupt, opening a case with Microsoft SharePoint Admin support team may be the way to go. They may have some sql queries or other tricks that can find corrupted documents.
